Common Poker Rule Variations
If you are new to poker, you may be overwhelmed by now with the number of online poker rules. Then, if you are an experienced poker player you might already know one or two rules very well. But have you ever wondered how many poker rules out there that you still need to learn? Here are some of the most common rules used in online poker.
High-Low Split
A variation of high-low split requires you to have an 8 low or better to qualify for low. If no one has an 8 low or better, the best high hand wins the whole pot. Sometimes, however, the rules may require that you have to declare – either simultaneously or consecutively – whether you are going for high, for low, or for both.
Lowball
The lowest hand wins the whole pot. Each player is dealt five cards facedown, after which there is a betting round. You are required to open with a bet or fold. Whoever remains in the pot after the first betting round now has a chance to replace their cards with new ones. The most common poker variant that uses this playing rule is Razz and 2-7 Triple Draw.
Passing Cards
In this specific poker game you are allowed to exchange or pass cards with your opponents. An example of this is known as Anaconda.
Kill Game
If you win two pots in a row in this game, the bets will be doubled. In some variants of Lowball, you may choose to kill by placing a double bet after seeing your first two cards.
Twist or Tittle
If a twist is added to your current game you can replace exactly one card from your hand with a new one from the remaining deck stub. However, if you do not like the new card you can purchase another one by simply adding money to the pot.
Roll Your Own
Roll your own is usually used in stud games. You are allowed to decide which of your card will be turned up and be visible to other players. In Seven-card Stud, the “roll” action only applies to the first 3 cards, all of which are dealt face down. Each of the players has the chance to decide which cards to expose. The play then continues as with regular Seven-card Stud.
How to Play Razz Poker
Razz is a type of poker that can be played by 2 to 8 persons. The game uses a standard 52 card deck and the game flows almost like Seven Card Stud except that the player who has the lowest hand wins.
Its objective is quite simple – players use the 7 cards available to create the lowest poker hand rank. The best possible Razz hand contains Ace, Two, Three, Four and Five of any suit. The Ace is always low in Razz poker. Straights and Flushes are not considered a bonus in Razz. It is played with a fixed limit betting structure – means that no player may wager more or less than the stakes of the game.
Betting in a game of Razz consists of 5 rounds. In the first two rounds, all bets and raises must be equivalent to the low-end stakes (e.g. $4), then in the last three betting rounds, bets and raises should match the high-end stakes (e.g. $8). Each round can have a maximum of only three raises.
Bets must be placed before any cards are dealt in the first round. The minimum ante is around one-fifth of the lowest possible bet amount. Then, three cards are dealt to every player, two cards are face down and one is face up – third street. Next, the player who has the highest face up card must be the first to make a bet again – bringing in. Once more, bets must be equal to one-fifth of the low limit bet. Another card facing up will be drawn to each player – fourth street. Players must bet again if they wish to stay in the game. The betting amount is now equal to the higher limit. The last three rounds (fifth street, sixth street and seventh street) will be the same as the preceding rounds only that in the seventh round the winning hand will be revealed.

Figuring Blackjack Payouts
In blackjack, there are several different payouts available to players. Some are straightforward but some are also down right confusing. Here are some helpful tips that you should consider to know how much you can really get:
First, you should spot the largest blackjack payout offered by most casinos.
It is very important to know how much you can get when you play because there is a large amount of blackjack hands that have “even money” or a one to one payout. You may receive an equal amount of your bet or even double, if you win the blackjack hand.
Second, you must know how much a blackjack pays.
Getting a blackjack is the very objective of the game. When your first two cards totaled exactly 21, you have a blackjack. With this hand you can be paid 3:2 or 1 ½ of the wagered amount. The simplest way to figure this payout is to get the amount of your bet and add another half of the same amount to it. For example if you bet $25, you’ll get a $37.50 payout (25 + 12.50).
Third, you should be aware of the insurance payouts.
It is a payment made for your extra bet – insurance bet. This is a side bet, wherein you bet for the dealer’s blackjack hand. If he does have a blackjack, your insurance bet will pay 2:1. So, when you make an insurance bet of $10, you would win 2 x 10 or $20. However, if the dealer does not have a blackjack, you just lose the insurance bet and not your original bet.
Percentage Bonuses
Today’s top casinos differ gravely when it comes to percentage bonus offerings. These bonuses are usually linked to the size of the percentage being offered. Since casino operators seem to be getting really aggressive in terms of size of bonuses, the amounts being given away can be really big than you would ever think.
Percentage bonuses are derived from the amount of money players deposit and thus, used as plain incentives to persuade players to make bigger deposits. Usually, it is a part of ongoing promotions, or a part of a first-deposit bonus package of online casinos. This type of bonus range from 5% to 50% and have various conditions on withdrawals.
Several casinos may require you to wager the amount of the bonus. For, example if you deposited $100 in your bankroll and the bonus percentage is 10%. You must bet at least $10 in the first casino game you will play. Others, even condition the bonus itself by first wagering the deposit and only after that the player may receive the bonus.
If you’re a steadfast player with a huge bankroll you would benefit from this type of bonus because the amounts you collect depend on your deposit. So basically, the more you deposit the more you may enjoy these types of casino bonuses.
Online Double Exposure Blackjack
In double exposure blackjack, the player’s two cards are dealt face up after he places his wager and so as the dealer’s. This way, the dealer’s cards are exposed and can be observed for hits and stands. Players can then use this information and wisely choose what move to make with the given hand.
The rules for double and split moves in this blackjack variation differ from the usual blackjack game. You can only choose to double on hard totals of 9, 10 and 11. However, you can still double after splitting hands and can re-split each hand once after splitting and can therefore play up to four hands.
Aces can be re-split but only one card can be dealt to split aces. The split ace and a 10 value card will total 21 but not considered as a blackjack. You can also split unlike cards with a value of 10, such as but not limited to queen and jack. Yet, to actually make these moves you have to place additional stakes.
All wins in double exposure blackjack are paid with even money. So, it doesn’t matter if you get to hit a blackjack or not. All you need to do is focus on the game itself and be sure to win the match.
Single Deck Blackjack
A lot of Blackjack players prefer to play with just one deck of cards wherein generally most regular casino blackjack tables have four to eight decks of cards in a shoe. Single Deck Blackjack is increasingly rare but surely appeals to the majority of players looking for an excellent yet easy to master Blackjack game.
Here are some help for the novice blackjack player of Single Deck Variations:
When playing Hard Totals you must:
- Double down on 11 against the dealer’s up cards
- Double down on 9 against 2 through 6 instead of 3 through 6
- Double down on 8 against 5 or 6 instead of just hitting against all up cards
- *Hard Total – the total of any hand not containing Aces or the total of a hand where the Ace is counted as 1.
Then for Soft Totals if you have:
- Ace – 8, you can double down against 6 instead of just standing against all up cards
- Ace – 7, opt to stand if the dealer has a Ace only if the dealer has to stand on all 17s
- Ace – 6, go for a double down against 2 through 6, instead of just doubling against 3 through 6 like in multiple-deck games
- Ace-3 or Ace-2, better to double down against 4, 5 or 6 instead of just against 5 and 6, as in the multiple-deck game
- *Soft Total – a hand containing an Ace counted as either 1 or 11 without the total going over 21.
Lastly for Splitting Pairs, if you are dealt with:
(If doubling after splits is allowed)

- 3-3 split against 2 through 8
- 4-4 split against 4, 5, or 6
- 6-6 split against 2 through 7
- 7-7 split against 2 through 8
(If not)
- with 2-2 split against 3 through 7 in single-deck blackjack
- with 3-3 just split against 4-7 regardless of the number of decks
- with 4-4 do not make a split
